Another Maddenoliday Miracle

Scoff all you want that Maddenoliday is just another holiday fabricated by Proctor & Gamble in order to sell trinkets and moon pies. I know better. EA Sports and Tiburon are beneficent forces in this world and one day you, too, shall understand.

Madden has become a cultural totem in the sense that people with little knowledge of football and video games can use it as a means to belittle those who do. And we need that. Without cultural shorthand, we'd actually have to try things before dismissing them as ridiculous.

It's also a pretty fun game.

In the days when I was dewy-eyed, filled with wonder and had disposable income, I would reserve my copy of Madden in advance, not realizing that if you just went to Toys 'R' Us on the release date, they had 38 copies available while all the Herbs were clamoring at gaming stores.

But I miss the connection that only comes with rampant consumerism and misplaced priorities. So, to commune with my fellow Maddenites, last night before the midnight release I went to the nearest videogamery, which is the Gamestop on Duke Street in Alexandria, Va.

When I arrived at 10 p.m. to behold the assembled dregs, there were only two guys waiting outside the store. Hardly the throng I expected. One was a short, squat black guy in a Jason Campbell jersey. I thought it might have been the Maj, but he was carrying less than an ounce of weed.

The gate barring the front door was shuttered but you could see the store employees milling around inside.

I asked if they knew whether they'd reopen at midnight to sell the game. One of them said the store would start taking money at 10:10 and people would have to come back at midnight, because the store wouldn't want to do any of that direct money for goods shit.

A store employee peeked through the gate to tell the guy they were moving it back to 10:15.

"Okay, okay, I'm gonna wait here," he told the clerk. "So you better open up at 15. 'Cause if you're not open at 10:15, I'm calling Alexandria poe-lease and report you."

After four minutes I decided I'd had enough.

I didn't take any pictures of the two guys but on the way back I snapped this one of a humorously named Chinese carryout near my home.

Oh, and I think this Madden has gang tackles or something. And a roster update, which is all most of us ask of it. Excelsior!

Football Season Is A Month Away, But Making Fun Of Peter King Season Is Here To Stay!

Some fun with Peter King on a Monday afternoon. Today, King made the following comment about HBO’s “Hard Knocks” show:

"My one quibble with these shows: They're so fast-paced and move from one drama to the next and one scene to the next, that you don't really
get the feel of what camp is truly like. Very often, camp is boring,
tedious and full of drills you can't watch for very long or you'll go
crazy. If the show is to be the real story of training camp, it must
point out -- not just in flashes but in minutes -- what really happens
at camp, which is often extraordinarily humdrum."

Agreed. I, too, would find the show far more fascinating if it were more boring. Now you now why King's MMQB column is 56,000 words long. We at KSK found King’s logic irresistible. From it, we drew the following conclusions:

-King doesn't understand why the WSOP doesn't show the hands where everybody folds

-King watched Major League last night, and wished they'd show how well Willie Mays Hayes worked the count

-King doesn't understand why he can't watch every single American Idol audition

-He's disappointed Shark Week has so much killing when, in fact, most of the time sharks are just swimming around

-He’s a huge fan of Kevin Costner films

-He will only attend a wedding if it is Greek Orthodox

-He wishes he could read ALL the mail Bill Simmons gets in his mailbag

-King wishes pornography had more foreplay. Women just don't get automatically wet, you know

-King wants to know why his Lawrence of Arabia Director’s Cut DVD skimped on the deleted scenes

-King wishes "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" consisted of one uninterrputed take

-King thinks "To Catch a Predator" doesn't depict chat rooms accurately, should show footage of benign exchanges

-King wishes that the producers of The Office would shift the focus from the employees to the hard facts about paper sales

-King wishes Tony Romo would cuddle more

-When Peter King bought tickets to "28 Days Later" he was was stunned and disappointed to learn he didn't have to wait four weeks to see the movie

-King wishes Yes had produced more B-side compilations

Clearly, this is why King enjoys going to Starbucks so much. Yours in the comments.

KSK Gamebook: Chargers-Seahawks/BDD’s Vacation

-This edition of the Gamebook will cover all seven minutes of last night’s game that I took in, along with some notes from my lovely week at the beach. Ah, the beach, where people go to sit in uncomfortable chairs and read. There’s nothing like it.

-Hello, skimboarders of the world. My name is Drew, and I’d like to let you in on a little secret: skimboarding is, bar none, the gayest of all water sports. When I was a child, my parents dropped me off at the ocean, jammed some Bull Frog (SPF 8,000) into my eyes, and threw me into the surf, leaving me to fight the vicious undertow for 8 hours while they enjoyed mixed drinks, shrimp cocktail and sesame sticks on the veranda. And I braved the ocean like a fucking man. That’s not what you’re doing, skimboarders. Put all the skulls and shit on your board that you want. You aren’t surfing. You’re pretend surfing, and you know it. You’re about as in tune with the ocean as Woody Allen. You can get the same sensation putting on brand new Wigwam socks and skidding across your parents’ hardwood floor. And you don’t have to put on suntan lotion to do it. Yeah, I know most of you are seven. But you’re seven going on douchebag. So find a real water sport, or get the fuck outta the ocean.

-Speaking of shrimp cocktail, I would like to demand a shrimp cocktail that is, in fact, a real cocktail. It should have 12 shrimp, three parts Stoli, a jigger of dry vermouth, a splash of tomato juice and Frank’s hot sauce, and a roasted Portobello mushroom dangling out of it. I’m tired of these alcohol-free shrimp cocktails. It’s deliberate false advertising, and, as an alcoholic, I resent it.

-I spent the majority of my vacation trying to mentally understand why I drafted Jeremy Shockey over Alge Crumpler in our Yahoo League draft. There’s no excuse for it. Crumpler is healthier, puts up better numbers, and gets an upgrade at QB this year from the least accurate passer in history to the 2nd least accurate passer in history. Shockey has been overrated for years, yet I drafted him anyway. Anyway, I’ve been thinking about why I did it, and the only reason I can think of is that I am a fucking racist. I’m so racist, I should do a cameo on the Opie & Anthony show. Shame on me. There’s only one thing I can do to make up for it, and that is read a Toni Morrison book. I picked “Sula”. I hear it’s very short, and that you only need to read five critical pieces on it to know what actually happens in it.

-I had one celebrity spotting on my vacation, and it was none other than John Stossel. Yes, the John Stossel, the man who’s made an entire career out of being mistaken for Geraldo Rivera. He was at a gym, arguing with a clerk. I’m assuming he was arguing about whether or not Americans really NEED to work out. He, like “Sula”, is also very short. I can fit him in my shirt pocket.

-Since I am old, I no longer go out to bars while on vacation. Instead, I stayed in and played Cranium with my wife, my sister, and her husband. Cranium: the board game for people who can’t decide which board game they’d like to play. During our game, my sister drew one of the Cameo (nee charades) cards. The word she was asked to act out was “reproduce”. Fuck you, Cranium.

A couple thoughts from last night’s game:

-Matt Hasselbeck should not be wearing see-through baseball hats.

-All QB’s now get a green button on their helmets that they can use to activate their communications systems. Byron Leftwich plans to use the button repeatedly during the course of the season to order his traditional 3rd quarter Triple Monster Thickburger from Hardee’s.

-Ed Hochuli, Mike Carey has seen your luscious bis and tris and has decided he ain’t taking that shit lying down. Last night, Carey showed off two lean, powerful Howitzers encased in sleeves tighter than a weisswurst casing. Carey has fired his shot across the bow, Hochuli. You better step it up if you want to be one of the token “regular” people chosen for People’s 50 Most Beautiful.

-I saw lots of ads for the show “Chuck” last night. Given the hotness of the blond chick in the promos, I really don’t know why they’re spending so much time focused on Chuck. Chuck can go take a walk off a bridge for all I care.

-I went back and forth between the game last night and “Deep Blue” on Discovery Channel, narrated by the silky smooth Pierce Brosnan. I saw a killer whale fuck up a baby gray whale (Bonus points for the infanticide!), and a school of sharks ravage some fish on the ocean floor (double nice!). I don’t know why they covered the emperor penguins, though. That one movie told us everything we need to know about them. I get it. They get really fucking cold and walk a long way for their young. Amazing. But enough already. The tale’s been told. Let’s keep our focus on the killing, shall we?

-I did not see any of the studio show last night. But I’m excited to see Tiki Barber in action. I’ve heard he very telegenic, and by that I mean he says nothing interesting and has meticulously groomed eyebrows that border on being creepy. I also fully expect Brandon Jacobs to steal all his good lines. Fucking Jacobs.

-I did, in fact, catch some football during my vacation, in between washing sand off my child and forgetting to apply sunscreen to my feet. It was three minutes of the third quarter of the Cowboys-Colts preseason “game” on Thursday night. And even though it wasn’t a real game, and even though the players involved were one step below Division VII-AAAAA level, those three minutes were all I needed to realize how much I would like summer to be over. Don’t get me wrong. I love summer. Especially in DC: the smell of hot garbage wafting through the air, homeless people in open-toed shoes, fat women in Tevas… it's magic! But a taste of preseason football is all I need to say goodbye to sunshine and beaches and all that shit I’m supposed to like but don’t really care for all that much.

As I’ve grown older, the NFL offseason feels longer and longer with each successive year. The NFL has, at seven agonizing months, the longest offseason of the three major sports by far. Baseball only goes away for five months. The NBA, a mere four. Neither stays away long enough for me to celebrate its reemergence, and both are horribly overcovered in the blogosphere. Oooh, Gilbert Arenas has a personality! Isn’t that amazing?!

Sorry Gil, but we are but a month away from a new NFL season. So I could give two shits about you, or Kevin Garnett, or Barry Bonds, or remedial skimboarders, or anything else that is distinctly NOT football. Fuck you summer, and fuck you, all you other little placeholder sports. I have a huge footballrection. It lasts five months, and I ain’t consulting a doctor about it.

Vince Young 'Leery' About Picking Self
In Upcoming Fantasy Football Draft

Titans QB Vince Young said in an interview last week that he was "a little bit leery" about selecting himself in the upcoming draft for his fantasy football league.

"I don't know, man," Young told Sporting News Radio's Tim Brando outside the Titans' practice facility last Thursday. "I don't know who I want for my fantasy QB. I'm picking eighth, so I know I'm gonna get stuck with a shitty running back already, so I have to go RB-RB-WR this year. It's crucial that I pick up a good QB and, to be honest, I'm not sure I'm fantasy starter material."

Young, who appears on the cover of the this year's Madden video game, cited that earlier Madden cover athletes endured poor seasons immediately following their cover appearances.

"I had Shaun Alexander last year and he killed my whole damn fantasy season. And if I pick myself and I get injured, that means one thing: I'll have to pick up another fantasy QB from waivers."

Young noted his own fantasy production from last season as another deterrent for selecting himself this week.

"We get six points for passing touchdowns in this league, but I seem to get more rushing TDs than passing TDs for some reason. I read in my Fantasy Maniacs magazine that I lost my top receiver last year, and that's really made me think."

The 12-team fantasy football league, sponsored by businesses based throughout the state of Tennessee, will pay out a $10,000 first prize to a charity designated by the winner. Young has already mentioned how badly he wants to turn that prize over to his charity, the Scramble From The Pocket For The Cure Foundation, to benefit cancer research.

"That Kitna guy did alright last year. I could take him. I had Jake Delhomme and Philip Rivers last year, and those guys didn't put up good numbers, but I think they're better fantasy QBs than me. At least they have some weapons on their teams. Rivers has Antonio Gates, the No. 1 fantasy TE. I tried to talk to [Titans RB] LenDale [White] about how I don't have any quality offensive weapons on my team, but he didn't seem interested. He probably doesn't do fantasy."

Young plans to pick his No. 1 fantasy QB at or around the 6th round, "before somebody starts a run and I get stuck with Chad Pennington or some shit. I also want to draft my defense and kicker in the last two rounds. It's too bad Kenny Irons got hurt; he was one of my sleepers this year. Just think, with a good draft, I can win my fantasy Super Bowl and that big $10,000 prize. That's my goal this year. Plus I think I get a T-shirt, too."

"How awesome would that be? Me wearing my Fantasy Football Champs T-shirt to practice in the last week of the season. Man, I just know the guys would be so jealous of me and all the hard work I put in to winning my fantasy league. It's too bad they'll never know that feeling, the feeling of being a fantasy football champion."

"I might get the Colts defense, too. Just in case..."

Who Needs a Life When You Have Saturday Night Pre-Season Football?

TITANS!

VS.

REDSKINS!

Spero Dedes and Marshall Faulk are on the call and I'm moist in anticipation.

NFL Network is doing a great job of spotlighting all of the cute blonds in the pre-game crowd all of the.

It's cooled down to positively frigid 93 degree night in Tennessee.

Vince Young isn't playing because he was suspended for violating a team rule. The NFL Network's Adam Schefter has received no indication as to what Vince did to warrant such action.

Update
: KSK has learned through a source* that he's been suspended for engaging in inappropriate sexual relations with an underage racehorse.
*It should be noted that our source is my talking bong and he only speaks German

Redskins win the toss, thus insuring a championship.

ARE and Santana Moss put me at half mast (don't tell anyone).

Corner blitz--->Jason Campbell get killed--->fumble...and we're in mid-season form!

The Maj has imbibed.

Dropped interception by London Fletcher...welcome to DC London, you're going to fit in nicely.

Marshall Faulk blames the dropped interception on Washington's inability to capitalize on opportunities instead of blaming the flight path of the deflected ball. Then he blames Kerry Collins' drive-killing fumbled snap on the humidity instead of Collins' delirium tremens. Marshall Faulk doesn't like black people.

Right tackle falls down--->Jason Campbell gets killed--->fumble... The Maj is burning religious relics.

LaRon "The Ron" Landry just finished off what Jim Beam started on Kerry's liver.

In a stunning display of accuracy kicker Sean Shawn Shaun "Swisher" Suisham just hit the upright from 47 yards away. It's 3-0 Titans if you're scoring at home--and if you are, your loneliness saddens me (4:50 mark).

The refs hat looks like it's covered with a fresh coat of Optic White from Liberty Paints. I find myself blinded by the light.

London Fletcher just made his 275th tackle of the first half.

NFL officials will be viewing challenges in high definition for the first time. This makes a lot more sense than the old policy of listening to the out-of-town radio broadcast on a loop.

If you try to break a return on a Redskins punter Derrick Frost he's liable to destroy you.

Ade Jimoh just made a tackle and Jason Campbell's night is just about over so I'm done with this crap. Who wants to go pick up some hookers with me and my boy Andray? We'll meet you at Thomas Circle in an hour.

Friday, August 10, 2007

It's Friday. You ain't got no job. And you ain't got shit to do!

What a week! The off-season is officially over for both the NFL and KSK, bitches. Here is a run-down of this weekend's nationally broadcast games. Unbelievably, the Cardinals-Raiders tilt is regional coverage only.

  • Tonight: Bills at Saints, CBS, 8 pm (east coast, You live somewhere else? Figger it out your damn self!). We can’t wait to see which Saint gets absolutely demolished this week.

  • Tomorrow night: NFL Network has the ‘Skins at Titans. Turn down the volume on Bryant Gumbel and throw on something funky.

  • Sunday night: Is Football Night in America, or so we have been told a thousand times lately. The Chargers host the Seahawks, live from the Whale’s Vagina (see what I did there? That’s a line from Anchorman!) We have high douche-level expectations from Tiki Barber. We're confident he won’t let us down. Also, NBC’s studio promises to be as crowded as a Tokyo subway car.

Speaking of San Diego, this week’s cheerleader picture comes to us from last month’s Comic-Con International. (Follow that link for more hot, nerdy chicks.)

Christmas Ape totally wants to (wait for it) “bone” these chicks.

For those not into the whole necro thing, here are couple of Niners cheerleaders who look a little more lively.

Sorry, they have no interest in helping you pull a Fredo.

Have a good weekend, kids. We anxiously await Big Daddy Drew’s triumphant return from vacation at the Renaissance Faire. Even though I’m sure he plans on doing lots of posts about his trip, he’s probably hoping all of you ask him about it anyway. If he says he doesn’t want to talk about it, he’s just being polite-- so it’s okay to ask him repeatedly.

[In case you missed the post from earlier, there are still some spots available in the KSK Suicide Pools. Hawesome!]

Jerry Jones is COLD LAMPIN'

We were recently outbid on eBay in an attempt to acquire a hard copy of this slick golden oldie from 1985, an instructional book on hip-hop dance, with a fresh to DEF! ad starring Alfonso Ribeiro, or, as you better know him, Carlton Banks.

Classic, right? And the booklet looks incredibly informative. Step 1: stand upright. Step 2: do a head-spin. Step 3: accept phone numbers from the ladies. It's like those "Drawing Comics the Marvel Way" books I squandered all my youthly savings away on. (Step 1: draw a circle. Step 2: completed Wolverine.)

Anyway, we were wondering who could have swooped in and taken this away from us, but then reader Danny from Dallas sent us this clip. That dastard!

Suicide Is Painless, Unless You Screw It Up

Believe it or not, suicide isn't always a lot of fun. It can tear apart families and scar loved ones for years to come, fortunately you'll be too dead to care! These days there are so many ways to off oneself that it's not always easy to keep abreast of the hot new trends in felo-de-se.

Even those of us who aren't (currently) suicidal harbor thoughts of self-destruction, it's as natural as jerkin' it with a plastic bag over your head while you sit on a cattle prod. But what would be the most befitting way for you to shuffle loose the mortal coil? Everyone has had their own opinions dating back to 1942 when suicide was invented by young wordsmith William Shakespeare. His early visions of Ophelia's relaxing soak in the creek and Romeo's power-nap set the tone for the future of the game. Since then quitters the world over have expanded on these simple methods and thrown in their own special flair. So if you had a good run and were ready to call it a life how would you want to do the deed?

I'll go ahead and kick off the draft with my first selection: Making friends with the ground!

As usual, we've got some rules. Follow them or your death may not be so optional.

1. You may not draft jump off of the bridge at Cornell, because that's totally played out
2. Draft one method of death at a time
3. Wait a full ten picks in between draft picks
4. UPDATE: Must be PLAUSIBLE methods. Fucked to death by Angelina Jolie ain't happenin', pal.

If you are honestly suicidal you probably shouldn't partake in this exercise or watch pre-season football.

Team Suicide...Do It! The KSK Suicide Pools

UPDATE (9/6): This is the latest group. ID#: 27548, pw(latelate). Remember, one entry per person. Thanks for playing.

A quick announcement:

KSK will be running a suicide pool for the 2007 season. If you're interested, we'd like you to get in on it. Here's the information:

Here's our Group ID# (1510) and the Password (gargargargar).

If you've never done a NFL suicide pool before, you pick one team per week. If your team wins, you advance to the next week. If your team loses, stick a fork in your ass, because you're done. Oh, and you can only pick a team to win once. That bit is crucial.

This particular group only holds 50 people. Once it fills up, we'll open another group, and so on, until everyone that wants to get in, gets in. There's plenty of room on this crazy train, but, for fuck's sake, one entry to a person. We will post a comprehensive leaderboard of the survivors when the pack gets whittled down to 30.

We will do something special for anyone that survives the entire season. We don't know what that will be yet, so don't ask. The updates for new groups will be made in this space, so check back if you don't get into the first group.

UPDATE: Group 2 is up. Same link, ID#: 3858, pw(jeangray). Sorry that took so long; I just woke up.

UPDATE: Group 3 is up now, too. Same link, ID#: 3877, pw(majofhonor).

UPDATE: Group 4 is up. Same link, ID#: 3920, pw(donthasseltheuf).

UPDATE: Group 9 is up. Same link, ID#: 4033, pw(tblmovienight).

UPDATE: Congratulations to Kels, who just got his ass banned for signing up for more than one pool. It takes skill to finish dead last before the contest even starts. ONE ENTRY PER PERSON. If you put in two entries, I will find your cheating ass. So don't bother.

UPDATE: Group X is up. Same link, ID#: 4198, pw(urmomcame4me).

KSK 2007 NFL Season Prekkake: Oakland Raiders

Five Fast Facts About the Raiders:

-JaMarcus Russell's mother is insisting that if he's gonna stay at her house during his contract dispute, he better change outta that one all-black suit he's been wearing since April.

-It was speculated that Lane Kiffin, who at 32 is the league's youngest coach, released center and long-snapper Adam Treu because Kiffin doesn't want anyone on the roster to be close to his age or older. Owner Al Davis decided this was sound policy, fired no one ever again.

-Dominic Rhodes is only now beginning to realize why Edgerrin James kept sending him repeated "nnnooooo don't tk bg monee from shitty tms w/ no linez" texts during the off-season.

-The Raiders are still the only AFC team this decade to lose a Super Bowl. In other news, the Raiders went to a Super Bowl this decade? Really? No foolin'?

-Despite fielding a team with Warren Sapp and JaMarcus Russell, it's Mike Williams' weight problem that is troubling the Raiders.

Projected 2007 Record:
5-11

Actual 2007 Record:
0-13-3 (Defense pitches three shutouts. Offense doesn't score all season.)

Since going to that aforementioned Super Bowl in the 2002 season, the Raiders are 15-49 during their last four seasons, representing the worst stretch in franchise history. And there is little indication that things are on the upswing. Sure, the defense is stout, but not good enough to win games on its own.

Their head coach is younger than two of our writers and about a half dozen of his own players. They possess no proven reliable receivers and the running back they signed in the offseason is probably their best blocker.

And they're in Oakland.

Of course, this is the part where I segue to some auspicious moment heralding the coming uplift. A breaking of the clouds that lights the way to a new day, where wins pile high and Daunte Culpepper is nowhere to be found. And the thing to usher in that new day is...

...

...

is...

...

well, Michael Bush could be okay.
