What The F--k Do We Call This Play?

You know the story by now: Eli Manning escapes certain doom and finds David Tyree in the middle of the field. Tyree goes up and makes an amazing catch by holding the ball onto his helmet, converting a crucial 3rd-and-long and setting up the game winning score. We at KSK agree, as you certainly do, that this sequence of events is among the greatest plays--if not the greatest play, in Super Bowl history.

What we can't agree on is what to call it, how to refer to it. This play needs a instant-recall nickname that signals the DVR player in my mind to find this play, and reminisce over its kickassedness. "The Catch," obviously, is out. "The Clutch" is getting tossed around, but that doesn't really do it for us. Here's part of the list that we came up with, and we need your help. If nothing else, it will get you warmed up for the upcoming commenter drafts.

Here we go:

The Snag.

The Grab.

Jesus Christ, Let Me Complete This Or My Endorsements Are Ruined.

Boston Flee Party.

Running On Empty.

A Prayer To St. David.

Rodney Harrison's A Little Bitch Who Should Have Batted That Down.

The GIANT Catch (see what I did there?).

David Ty-REEEEACH!

Mama's Boy Runs Home.

Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening.

The Incorporation of St. David, Arizona (yes, it's an actual city).

A Boy Named Elisha.

I Have To Convert Here Because I'm Sure As Hell Never Getting Laid Again Otherwise.

Blue Moon Rising.

Run, Eli, Run.

Plaxico Saw This Whole Thing Coming.

  11. I'm down with The Giant Snatch also. In fact, whatever it finally gets called no longer matters. You can't unread something that perfect.

MMP - Another stellar post but you need to save "Dream Caused by the Flight of a Bee around a Pomegranate a Second Before Awakening" up for a Bengals reference. Just sayin'.

  13. One of the following:

    Fade To Black
    All Within My Hands
    (For Eli:) Leper Messiah
(For Pats fans:) The Thing that Should Not Be

That way, the play will always have a built-in soundtrack when it gets cued up on SportsCenter.

Who the hell is David Tyree?

  22. Honestly, the best name I've heard came from a producer here on WFAN: "The Flee to Tyree." It rhymes, it captures both ends of the play, in short, it's goddam perfect. If the powers that be at KSK can spread this one around, that would be great.

  27. I love the Giant Snatch -- it's true, ask anybody -- but I doubt that catches on with the bigwigs at ESPN and SI. We need to find something a little more PG and a lot less interesting.

Ultimately, I think you've got to credit Eli's escape from the sack as well as the helmet grab.

Maybe ... the Release and Catch?

    Eh.

  45. While partial to the Giant Snatch, I'd think it would be fine as "Phantom", or "The Phantom", if we have to do the same freakin' thing over and over again.

I'd also like to nominate "3rd and 5", as it was the down and distance on the play, and the very next time the Patriots are playing a game where their opponent has 5 yards to go on 3rd down, I'm going to laugh hysterically.

Yeah it sucks but you try getting motivated when you know you've already lost.

    ReplyDelete
  49. If we're still looking for an ESPN/SI-friendly name, then who says this can't be called "The Catch"? I'd argue it's a bigger play than the Montana/Clark catch: this one was a more impressive athletic feat, plus it was in a Super Bowl, not a conference championship. If LaDainian Tomlinson can be LT, then Eli to Tyree can be "The Catch."

  66. I wonder if there are ever brainstorming sessions where the first idea is so good they just say "fuck it, let's go with that."

So I'm voting for "Giant Snatch."

If you want them to use it on ESPN, make it "The Giant Snatch and Brett Favre Is a Hero For Our Times."

  67. I'm pathetic for mentioning my own piece of shit work, but i wrote this morning about a federal bailout of gamblers who bet on the patriots and/or the over and called it the "Patriotic Reacharound". Probably works better for that catch than my use. Not as well as Giant Snatch though, good work allow me to retort.

  80. Can't someone here manipulate Google so "Giant Snatch" gets you to some youtubage of the play or come back around to the KSK still shot from the top of this post? It worked for Rick Santorum and anal leakage, so why not let similar net manipulation work for KSK?

Perhaps Harrison didn't try and horse collar Tyree but it sure looked like he tried to snap his spine on his knee like Bane doing Batman.

I'd apologize for such a geek reference but you went with Dali so... no, you're right, to geeky.

    ReplyDelete
  81. "The Giant Miracle" will be the final relatively boring but accurate name. I like "Houdini Hails a Helmet" as a further description.

  82. Fingertips. He's holding that ball with his fingertips in the middle of an NFL tackle - shaking my head damn.....

    ReplyDelete
  83. I personally think The Imperfect Catch (although Giant Snatch is funny, I agree with the other post about ESPN/other media not wanting to put that out there....!)

    According to Dictionary.com:

    Imperfect:not perfect; lacking completeness

I mean what says it better? A perfect season coming to an end on one far from perfect catch by Tyree - The Imperfect Catch!

I mean, I'm a huge Giants fan and all, but that catch was off his helmut on a broken play that was by no means drawn up. Now a perfect catch would have been Brady to Moss to win the game and complete a perfect season. That's why it's The Imperfect Catch - IMO
